I FAIL A LOT

This one time, I tried to draw EVERYONE in a book that had no plot.

My tries, misses, showings, almosts, ‘well it was fun anyway’s, and a bunch of outright failures.

None of this has made money. For money, I do this stuff. I do the rest for love. I make books no one reads, art no one sees, and music no one listens to. Even my kid barely gives a new song or picture a second look. “Great, Dad.” It’s a good reminder that the joy is in work. Good lessons.

I am fine to be defined by my ‘failed art’. If I’m honest with myself I have to admit that a lot of the art has been pretty cringe. Lots was just awful. It meant something to me, but looking back as a 3rd party it’s not mysterious that it didn’t find commercial success. If you own any of it, I’m sorry, burn it, and I’ll send you a puppet.

This is less “look what I did” and more “here’s a bunch of times I’ve tried something.” Working on a book around the idea that we should think of ourselves as water-based lifeforms (vs carbon), but honestly, I’m all about the Stuppets!

I’m learning that everything is all just one thing. But what is it?

For a time I thought the way forward was to create games that people could play, but it turned out these are all pretty confusing and probably not marketable.

Slaveopoly: a deep dive on ancient to modern slavery and shows how race is a holdover from the transatlantic slave trade.
The Cards of THinking Clearly is a Card version of Rolf Dobelli’s the Art of Thinking Clearly, these showcase 99 cognitive disorder cards
Hack Yo Life shows the ingredients of human happiness and how to find it
Race Cards: This is a 92 large format set of cards that trace Race from Ancient slavery (no race), Greek, Roman, Trans Atlantic and NaZI forced labor, Politics, religion, art and finally language. No person has Black or white skin. All humans are shades of the same color. THis proposes a way though, let’s end race completely as a concept. Here are the cards to help.
TIME: This one places technological advances next to human rights to help give situational awareness

NIMBY

I was lucky to work with Micheal Snook managing the NIMBY warehouse for about four years. We worked to build artist spaces, build an artist community and provide a large industrial space for large scale burningman art. Because we had to keep rent very low (because artists) we through several shows, a few Fight Parties, and a lot of fundraisers. I learned a ton about community, helping to create art that I don’t do, and supporting a diverse community.
