AI MUSIC
I had no idea that AI music was this far along. OMG WOW!
PROMPT: Make a funky song and use these lyrics.
Baby got a big ole brain
Baby does equations
Lorentz transformations
Relativity on the tip of her tongue
Baby’s not a drinker
way more of a thinker
Run a quanta hotter
than all ya’ll!
That was it. Remember there is no drummer, guitarist or singer.

The way I used to make electronic music was joyously manual. It’s was all just for fun. You either play in each part, or you record vocals or find recorded samples and vocals, and then assemble them into tracks that then become songs. This piece has taken about four years to complete, encompassing seven songs (a lot more were initially considered, but they were filtered down over time). This isn’t for money; it’s really a fun sonic puzzle. But it’s limited. Especially if you don’t actually play strings, they can sound like a person playing strings on a keyboard. Anyway, it’s as far as I can take it. This is the limit of my musical/production ability. And I was feeling pretty good about it.
Then, a few days ago, I fed it into SUNO, a generative artificial intelligence music creation platform. It is a digital audio workstation by Warner Music. It is designed to generate realistic, commercial pop songs that combine vocals and instrumentation or are purely instrumental. Anyway, here are some private playlists. I’m not trying to promote any AI music publicly; this is just for the demonstration.
I’ll admit it’s a lot of fun. Been putting in old music and seeing what comes out. It’s mind-blowing! They sound like they did in my head, but I could never get them there. There are a lot of strings, and they took my clunky strings and played them with a (little too) much flourish
The Original playlist is on the left, and the exact songs, but AI “touched up” on the right. And done with recording music forever because (pout pout pout). I didn’t fuss with the AI songs too much, but it was enough. Sharing back and forth with my brother, but it’s really not the same feeling as grinding through the song, but also this feels like the way music will be ‘finished’ moving forward. I wasn’t trying to sell music anyway, but how does a human compete with that? How many of the other songs I listen to are made this way? Does it matter? Did we ever care about the backup band? Not sure….
